It's all about your metabolism
If you’ve wondered how to tell if you’re dealing with low testosterone, it’s a pretty common question. You might be dealing with the results of having low T and not really even know that’s what’s going on, or that you can do something about it.
Don’t sweat it, I’ve got you covered.
First of all, your testosterone (and other hormone) levels are tied to your metabolism. In other words, the better you are at breaking nutrients down into useful molecules for your body, the better your testosterone levels are going to be.
Ok, back to being able to tell if you have Low T or not. I also want to point out that “low T” isn’t really the right problem here, it’s really “out-of-balance T”. Because you can have really high total testosterone levels but very low free T levels, and still be dealing with symptoms.
You can also be aromatizing your free testosterone, which just means your body is turning testosterone into estrogen.
But “Low T” is what everyone remembers.
Signs your dealing with low testosterone
You are losing hair on your shins. I know this sounds weird, but loss of body hair is a sign of hormone imbalance. It has been noticed that often men dealing with low T have lost the hair on their shins specifically. On its own probably nothing but shin hair loss could be a sign if you notice any of these other things going on, as well.
You have excess belly fat and loss of muscle mass. This can be a bit of a chicken or the egg thing. Poor diet and lifestyle will lead to weight gain and muscle loss, but those things happen as a result of out of whack testosterone levels. Vicious cycle, excess belly fat turns more testosterone into estrogen, lowering T levels even further.
You have developed breast tissue. Like I mentioned above, belly fat aromatizes testosterone, or turns it into estrogen. Higher levels of estrogen can cause men to develop female characteristics like loss of body hair and even developing breast tissue.
You are often irritable and cranky, or even depressed. Hormones being out of whack will make anyone irritable. But low testosterone is linked to mood swings, increased stress and even depression.
You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’. Testosterone is the main hormone that promotes sex drive (in both men and women). Low or unbalanced testosterone levels can lead to low or no libido and can even cause erectile dysfunction.
You’ve got no energy or drive. Lower levels of testosterone are linked to low energy levels and fatigue (see? metabolism!), which then makes you want to exercise less driving T levels down even further. Less energy, less movement, more body fat, lower muscle, less testosterone. Vicious cycle.
Take these all together and you can see signs pointing to a slow metabolism leading to out-of-whack hormones.
If some of these sound familiar (and I bet they do) I encourage you to talk to your doctor about getting your testosterone levels checked.
But what to do from there?
Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan to help you out.
First, we identify diet and lifestyle habits that could be causing insulin resistance. Being insulin resistant means your metabolism is out of whack, and your testosterone is likely low.
Next we land on some foods to add into your day or swap with things you eat now. Getting more protein and minerals into your diet will help relight your metabolism and help you build testosterone.
Then we figure out some different kinds of movement to add into your day. Resistance training builds muscle which helps stoke your metabolism and stimulate testosterone. Aerobic exercise builds cardiometabolic endurance and strengthens your heart and lungs.
We'll spend some time getting your mind right and finding ways to deal with stress. Chronic stress is linked with low testosterone, weight gain and poor libido.
Finally, we decide if any supplements would help bridge the gap from where you are to where you want to be. Targeted nutrients like B12 or Vitamin D can help get you feeling right while we get your diet sorted out.
We work at it for 3 months, testing and adjusting and finding what works. I’m there to give you the tools you need, but also to support you and hold you accountable along the way.
I know you’re ready to do the work, you just need to know what to do, and you might need someone to spot you.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. That’s what I’m here for.
